Beyond Chacay Foundation

Building local capacity and international collaboration to promote conservation and sustainable change in the Galapagos Islands and other parts of Ecuador.

Activities That Address Local Needs

Capacity Building: Through the cooperation of high school and university student exchange programs, local agents of transformation have been mentored and supported during the introduction and implementation of entrepreneurship skills.

  • Education: Through expanded access to intranet and internet on all 4 populated Galapagos islands the quality, depth, and richness of school curriculums has improved dramatically.

  • Energy & Technology: Through collaborative relations with our partners, local youth have improved understanding, capacity to design & install, and vigilantly monitor productivity.

  • Ecotourism: Expanding awareness about improved conservation and commitment to sustainable results affecting the ecosystem has changed the tourism management model producing desired results.

How We Work:

Over the last eleven years (2013-2024), we have implemented the following programs:

  • Built a web-based data resource, Ecohelix, for tourists focused on conservation and sustainable use as a result of working with local stakeholders,

  • Reviewed results of community needs analysis with local leaders in order to guide production of programs and activities responsive to local needs,

  • Stimulated development of youth leadership on the Galapagos by linking them with High School and University students from Canada, Ecuador, and the United States,

  • Shared with leaders on the Galapagos, especially within FUNCAVID, (https://funcavid.org/) the design, costs and activities related to programs developed to benefit improved quality of life on the Galapagos.

  • Volunteering in program development, implementation, and evaluation

  • Local, regional, and/or international networking to promote existing and new programs

  • Contributions from participants with testimonials, videos and photos

  • Financial and in-kind support for specific activities

  • Develop university programs to participate in these projects on the Galapagos supporting sustainability of the pristine nature of the islands
